TURKEY

——————————————————

1. Can you start by introducing yourself?

——————————————————

“I am 19 years old and I am studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering here at AGU. I am from Lahore, Pakistan. I did my A-levels from Lahore Grammar School in Pure sciences and Mathematics.  I am deeply into music and I believe that it is an amazing way of expressing one’s self. I know how to play the guitar, western flute and also I love to sing.”

2. How did you come to Turkey?

——————————————————

“Well to be honest I didn’t even expect to be in Turkey but it turned out like this and I am grateful about it. Once my cousin asked me to join him for a Turkish education fair. Over there I went to different stalls of different Turkish universities. I ended up at AGU’s stall. There I met Emeric. He explained to me everything about the University. I was impressed by the fact that the University was teaching totally in English and that it was also a State University which was more affordable for me. I ended up applying to AGU the same day; the application process was simple and then after some days I got the acceptance. I was still deciding as I had an option of a Pakistani university but my Father said that it is better if I go to Turkey and so I did.”

3. How do you feel about living in Turkey?

——————————————————

“I feel great! I am really enjoying living in Turkey and it’s a great experience for me.”

——————————————————

4. Did you experience any cultural shock?

——————————————————

“Not really. There are only some things that I find to be very different culturally but otherwise I find Pakistan and Turkey to be very similar. Some foods are very similar even some dishes, some have the same names. Also I believe that I wasn’t able to experience a cultural shock because of the dorms here in AGU. There were other international students and also the Turkish people didn’t let me feel alienated.”

——————————————————

5. Did you travel around?

——————————————————

“Yes, I did. First I went to Cappadocia with the other international students on a trip arranged by the University. It was a really fun trip and I saw some amazing views. One of my Turkish friends had invited me to his home city, Konya. So I went to Konya in the winter semester break. That was a really nice trip for me and it made me want to travel around and see more of Turkey and I realized that there is a lot to see in Turkey!”

 ——————————————————

6. How is your Turkish?

——————————————————

“Well, My Turkish is not so good. I can sometimes understand others and I am able to interact with them, but on a really limited skill; but I could’ve learned a lot more Turkish as it is not hard to learn a language when you are in the place where that language is spoken but I did not try enough.”

——————————————————

7. Do you sometimes go back home?

——————————————————

“Well, I am far enough from home not be able to go home often. I will go in the Summer break though.”

——————————————————

I sometimes practice music in the university. At least once a week I go out with my friends for dinner or sometimes we go to the mall.”

AGU

11. How did you hear about AGU? What made you choose this University?

13. How did your application process go? How did you feel before coming to AGU?

——————————————————

“It was very smooth. I applied online and sent the required documents online. Which made the application process a breeze. Well, to be honest I was kind of nervous but this was because I was going to a new place away from my home.”

——————————————————

14. How were your first steps at AGU?

What can you tell us about the Orientation Program?

——————————————————

“After I reached the dorms I settled in and then later that day we were taken for dinner by the International Office and over there I got to know the other international students. The next day we were taken for a tour of the University which was followed by the Orientation. In the Orientation we were told about AGU, the aims of the institute and the functioning of AGU. We were also given info about Turkey and also we were able to join the clubs in AGU that day. I had already met quite a number of students in the Student Village; then later on, when university started, I got to know more students, especially Turkish.

——————————————————

15. Do you like the Campus? What can you tell us about it? What is your favorite spot?

——————————————————

“I really love the campus. Well the buildings are nice especially the Steel Building; it is really well designed and is pretty amazing. Yes I believe that it is well-equipped. My favorite spot would be the parking area right next to the Steel Building, there are grass belts where I sit in the sun to see Mount Erciyes.

16. Do you like your classes?

——————————————————

17.What do you think of the AGU Core Curriculum?

——————————————————

“I think that it is something that is unique and it is actually helpful for one’s academic life. Although it may be challenging for some students who are doing business studies; but the University would change the core curriculum for them from the fall 2016 semester.”

——————————————————

18.What kind of knowledge did you acquire?

How has studying here changed you?

——————————————————

“Well I got a chance to acquire a lot of knowledge. From my studies in the classes, for hard skills we did some activities in the University like, these days, we are making robots with the LEGO EV3. And soft skills: I acquired a fair number of skills, like I was taught how to program in Java, I was taught some citation programs and other important programs that would help me in my academic life. These days we are learning a graphic software which is used to make 3D drawings for 3D printing.

I actually did. I can see the differences in class or even outside of class. I now have the knowledge to conduct research based studies, My English has improved a lot because of the 100% English environment.”

 ——————————————————

19.AGU focuses a lot on Hands-on training and practical work. Do you consider this approach to be translated into reality?

——————————————————

“Yes, I do. This can be seen in almost all the courses in the university. For example for Humanities 101 we had to go to the field and gather data from a charity home and then present it. In the course exploring professions we are working with robots and learning really helpful software.”

——————————————————

20.What can you tell us about the dorms and the canteen and other food opportunities?

——————————————————

“The dorms are really nice! They are clean, they fulfill important living needs. You can get hot water instantly, there is a proper equipped kitchen with a stove; there is also a fridge. There is high speed Wi-Fi available. The rooms are spacey and well furnished too. The canteen is also nice. There is actually the cafeteria and a café; both of them have good food and I like eating at both places.”

——————————————————

21.What kind of on- and off-campus activities did you participate in?

——————————————————

“Well I got a chance to play with an orchestra. It was actually an amazing experience. I played two songs with another international student. Also we had some parties that I attended; First there was one for the international students which was arranged by the AGU International Association. Then later there was a new year’s party that was also arranged by the same student club.”

22.What are you looking forward to next year?

——————————————————

“I am looking forward to the courses; they would be more related to my major and studies would become more interesting. Also I am really looking forward to Erasmus. I haven’t definitely decided on my Erasmus destination but I am a little inclined towards Czech Republic; maybe because I always wanted to go to that country. I’ll probably be going for Erasmus in the 3rd semester of university. I wanted to go skiing this season but I couldn’t but this year I would definitely go in the next winter. And I would travel a lot next year. I want to go to cities like Izmir and Antalya.”

 FUTURE CAREER

——————————————————

23. What’s your plan after finishing

your Bachelor Degree?

——————————————————

“I want to pursue a Master’s degree after completing my Bachelors. I actually want to pursue Master’s in Business administration but I am also interested in doing Master’s in Energy Engineering.”

——————————————————

24. What’s your dream career? Do you feel that studying at AGU will help you achieve your objectives?

——————————————————

“I always wanted to open up my own company which would provide electrical solutions and maybe later I would like to start manufacturing of my own.

Of course it has; I am gaining knowledge of the field and I believe that this University will help me attain the abilities required for my chosen career.”

——————————————————

25. What do you think about AGU’s potential on the national and world’s market?

——————————————————

“I think that it has great potential in the national market. AGU is well funded and it is developing really fast. In the future, I believe that AGU would be among the top universities in Turkey. AGU is working hard to acquire international recognition by going to international fairs in some countries. This, accompanied with their progress as a university, would make AGU gain a good place in the international market.”

——————————————————

26. Would you recommend your friends and other international students to join AGU?

——————————————————

“YES, I would!”

——————————————————

“I would tell them to make the most of this great opportunity; this is an amazing and a really great opportunity.
